Typeface: Interstate Mono Black from Font Bureau. I stacked the letters with an eye (an ear?) to the very oral, oratorial, oracular nature of Obama's campaign: I knew that people would be chanting “o-ba-ma”, as indeed they are. This purely typographic effort is a bit of a departure from a certain kind of design that can seem overly subjective. Obama and his campaign are about so much more than individual subjectivity.
The design started out very spontaneously like this, then became this, then finally became this, and then started popping up in various parts of New York City.
If any momentum can be created or built on by my small contribution, so much the better.
Like this mark? High quality output is in the works; in the meantime, cheap stuff is available. All proceeds will be given to Barack Obama. All proceeds were given to the Obama campaign. Note: there’s also the free wheatpaste option and now the free poster option over at Design(ers) for Obama. And, last but not least, there’s the book!
This was not the official design of the campaign; it is far from the best, far from the most celebrated (or notorious) — but it was probably the first.
